Class 4

Hello and welcome to our class page!

Class 4 is a team of 29 explorers, two teaching assistants, Mrs Key and Mrs Knapczyk, and two teachers, Mrs Southall who is with us on a Monday and Tuesday and Miss Moretto who is with us on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We also work closely with the rest of the Year 1 team who are in Class 3 with Mr Farooq and Mrs Bowles.

Every morning we learn phonics, literacy and numeracy.  Every afternoon we work on our reading and handwriting, before learning our topic, science, computing, art or PE.

Please keep checking this page as this is where we will be keeping you up to date with our learning though photographs, work and newsletters.

If you have any questions about our learning please come and speak to a member of the Year 1 team.

Have a look at some of the work we have been doing in our bubbles since coming back to school after lockdown.

Autumn Term Newsletter

In numeracy we started off practising our numbers to 20.

We started our topic about Toys by making our own toys using junk modelling to sell in our Toy Shop role play area.

We have been exploring and investigating toys from the past.

We imagined what a world without toys would be like! We thought about ways that we could entertain ourselves. We decided to go out into the garden to use our imaginations and use natural objects to make up our own toys and games.

We explored and played with old and new toys during Partake. We looked at the materials they were made from. It was lots of fun!

In numeracy we have been ordering numbers from smallest to greatest

On Mondays PE lessons we have been practising moving in different ways. On Wednesdays PE lessons we have been practising balls skills.

We became storytellers and worked in groups using storyboards to record the story of This is the Bear.

During Culture week, Class 4 learned about Italy. We tried Italian food, painted Italian flags, learned some Italian words, found Italy on a map and learned about some Italina landmarks.

We learned all about the Leaning Tower in Pisa and we made our own.

Mrs Holmes came into school to talk about the toys and games she played with as a child.

In PE this half term we are learning Gymnastics. We have been learning creative ways to travel along the floor and equipment, balancing skills aswell as different ways to roll and jump.

We have been learning about Diwali. We acted out the story of Rama and Sita before sequencing pictures and writing sentences about the story. We also made Rangoli patterns using beans and seeds and Diva lamps using clay and sequins. We also had special visitors come to school to talk to us about the festival.

Spring Term Newsletter

We started the Spring Term by practising movement skills in PE. We found ways to move balancing a beanbag on our heads, shoulders and back of our necks.

This term our class author is Giles Andreae. We found rhyme in each of his books, wrote our own sentences in the style of the author, wrote a book review of our favourite book of his and wrote facts about him.

In maths we have been learning about place value. Children made teen numners using numicon and place value cards.

To start our topic work we had a visit from Mr Dunn who has explored the Arctic! He brought in all of the equipment that he took with him to show us. Some of us were even able to try some of it on!

In music, we have been practising keeping to a beat in time with the song Mister Mister Macarella.

In Design Technology, children designed, made and evaluated finger puppets. Children first looked at different materials to decide which would be the best to use. They then designed their puppet before selecting their own materials and tools to make their puppets. Children then evaluated their puppets by saying what they liked and disliked..

To celebrate Pancake Day, Class 4 made pancakes! We read and followed a recipe, measured our ingredients carefully and mixed the imgredients together to make the batter. We learnt above Shrove Tuesday and Lent and how different countries celebrate it.

Class 4 have been learning about the Jewish celebration Shabbat. In groups we followed a recipe to make Challah bread. We then acted out the Shabbat celebration. We all laid the table, the ‘dad’ blessed each family member, the ‘mum’ lit the candles and sprinkled sugar on top of the Challah bread and then we all ate our Challah bread.
